Enugu State Government have sealed off the sinking 3-storey building with eight flats located in Maryland area of Enugu North Local Government Area, preparatory to its demolition.
Officials of both the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) and Federal Fire Service were there on Saturday to ensure residents were evacuated without harm.
SEMA’s Executive Secretary, Mrs. Nkechi Eneh, said her had mobilized first responders and supervised evacuation of tenants in the building up until 2.00 a.m. on Friday, July 31st.
According to her, “We have to save lives first because right now no one knows whether the building will crash by the right or left side.
“So, it’s important that every living person close by leaves the location.”
She said Friday night’s operation was hitch-free, but for a minor injury in one male resident.
Residents in nearby houses are scared of the effect the collapse will have on their houses.
Officials asked residents to keep away from the building until it is finally demolished because of the possibility of collateral damage.
